Weed watch

I tested 3 natural weed killers to see which would be best at killing the weeds. Specifically ones growing between the garden tiles.

Most of the weeds are dandelions, which I am told are very difficult to get rid of. We plan on growing vegetables in one of our flower beds so our preference would be an organic natural weed killer over a harsh chemical.

The most common results when searching online for “natural weed killers” are salt, white vinegar and boiling water

I chose 3 small weeds as my victims, labelled them and tried a different method on each.

I places rocks around the test area to stop anyone standing on them and interfering with the results. This is a very important scientific study after all!

My best friend said it looks like I am casting a spell here. In reality its more of a weed killing curse.

Results after 4 days

Most of the tutorials and blogs I read said it can take 7-10 days for the natural weed killer to work. But I, being impatient, wanted to see how they were progressing so far.

3. Salt

In last place is the salt. I read a couple of different methods to use salt. Most people said to make a salt solution with water and some said to just pour salt directly onto the weed. I took the lazy option and just poured a pile of salt onto it. I can’t really dismiss this as entirely ineffective as I did take the lazy gals approach, but this plant still looks quite green. Apart from the pile of salt disturbing it. There is some browning, but not as much as I would have hoped for.

2. White vinegar

Coming in in second place is the vinegar. There is some browning and drying on the leaves but the overall this plant still looks pretty green. The only areas effected are the areas where the vinegar touched the plant. It still has a bit of pep to it, its still bouncy and happyish looking.

1. Boiling water

In first place is the boiling water. It appears to have had the most effect. As you can see in the image, the leaves of the boiling water plant are browning and still wilted from the initial boiling water attack. This plant is completely flattened and looks miserable. The stalk in the centre is browning and overall this one looks the most defeated.

Results

After 4 days I can see some difference in the vinegar and boiling water methods and very little in the salt method. It is still too early to say for certain which one is the best. I’m hoping that after the full 7-10 days at least 1 of the plants will be dead and dried up enough to be easily removed.
